Kanchana
Malshani is a performing artist and dancer from Colombo. Classically trained in
Sri Lankan traditional dance, she later switched to exploring contemporary and
more improvisational styles after learning about Butoh – a form of
Japanese dance theater. Currently, she is working on developing a movement
style of her own.
For Our
Stories, Kanchana performed in her inimitable style, aiming to convey the
fluctuating fortunes and relentless misery pertaining to the story of a women
trying to fulfil multiple roles [as a daughter, sister, spouse, caregiver and
savior] while the world slowly crumbles around her. Despite the love and care
she received through all these roles she played in her life, the protagonist is
unable to escape her loneliness, which becomes more acute as time passes. Now
living in a care facility for the elderly, loneliness and time are her constant
companions.
