Alfred Jerushan Dalima is a short film producer from Valankai, Mannar and is currently, an undergraduate student at the University of Sabaragamuwa University. He is also a part-time artist and social activist, who aims at creating awareness on important societal issues through his art.
In his short film for Our Stories, Jerushan explores the story and emotions of a widow who faced severe hardships during the course of her life. He uses the symbol of a flower to bring out the concept of a beautiful family. The symbol includes two circles, a gray circle symbolizes the mother, while a black circle symbolizes the father. The six smaller circles drawn within the larger ones symbolize the six children in the family. The intersection of the two circles marks the war that engulfed the country. A petal falling into the flame of a candle depicts the outcome of the family’s exposure to the war. Four children and the father are fatalities of the war; and the widowed mother is left with the two surviving children. The mother ‘melts’ her life to bring them up. Her love and care for her family is represented by the melting candle.
